Abstract: The existence of axions is a generic consequence of the Peccei-Quinn dynamical restoration of the CP symmetry in QCD. At the same time, axions can easily provide the required cold dark matter of the universe, being a very different candidate from the usual WIMPs. After introducing the particle-physics motivation, the cosmological role of axions will be reviewed, in particular the "anthropic" parameter range where axions could provide a detectable contribution of primordial isocurvature fluctuations. I will also review the prospect of direct experimental axion detection.
