Abstract: Supergravity theories capture the low energy dynamics of string theory. The finiteness of the string length is imprinted in them via $\alpha’$-corrections given by higher derivative corrections to the leading order two derivative Lagrangian. These corrections can be lifted to eleven-dimensional supergravity the long wave length description of M-theory. I will present a background solution to the eleven-dimensional supergravity action, including terms quartic and cubic in the Riemann curvature, that admit an eight-dimensional compact space. Furthermore, I comment on the supersymmetry properties of this solution and will then dimensional reduce the complete action at eight-derivative level. Finally, the supersymmetry of the lower dimensional theory is discussed.
