Title: Towards the discovery of CP violation in neutrinos
Date (JST): Wed, Feb 03, 2016, 16:00 - 17:00
Place: Seminar Room A
Abstract: The recent observation of muon neutrino to electron neutrino conversion and electron antineutrino disappearance in reactor experiments via neutrino oscillations have opened the possibility of a new source of CP violation arising from an irreducible phase in neutrino mixing. Current measurements weakly favour a peculiar set of parameters that is consistent with large CP violation and normal mass hierarchy. I will discuss new plans at T2K to accumulate additional statistics (approximately three times the currently approved running) which may result in the first observation of neutrino and antineutrino asymmetries arising from CP violation if the parameters are near these currently favoured values. Following this program, Hyper-Kamiokande will investigate neutrino oscillations will significantly higher sensitivity and precision, providing essential information towards understanding the structure of mixing and mass in neutrinos.
