Abstract: A holographic approach to QCD in five dimensions is explored using input both from non-critical string theory as well as QCD. It is argued that a gravity theory in five dimensions coupled to a dilaton (with a potential) and an axion may capture the important qualitative features of pure YM. The geometry near the UV boundary is that of AdS_5 with logarithmic corrections reflecting the asymptotic freedom of QCD. In the IR the dilaton potential drives confinement and allows asymptotically linear glueball trajectories Flavor is introduced via space filling D4-anti-D4 pairs. Zero temperature spectra and finite temperature data match very well with lattice calculations. Predictions can be calculated both for zero temperature as well as for transport coefficients.
