Abstract: The character sheaves of Lusztig are of fundamental importance. They can be used to understand characters of finite groups of Lie type. In this talk I will explain an analogous theory in the setting of graded Lie algebras. Graded Lie algebras arise in the context of p-adic groups and loop groups from the Moy-Prasad filtration, for example. I will concentrate on the geometric aspects of the story: a nearby cycle construction and prehomogenous vector spaces. In a related lecture Ting Xue will discuss the application of these geometric ideas to classification of character sheaves. This is joint work with Ting Xue and also to a large extent joint work with Misha Grinberg.
