Abstract: Understanding the formation history of today’s most massive galaxies, which have assembled most of their stellar masses in the early Universe, remains one of the key challenges facing astronomers today. In this talk, I will present some new observational results regarding these issues. Specifically, I will focus on our recent discoveries of a new population of massive galaxies as well as a novel type of distant galaxy clusters in the early universe. I will discuss how these new discoveries help answer some of the fundamental questions on massive galaxy formation, and what new challenges they have raised to current theories.
