Abstract: We will report on a new numerical approach to solving the Einstein equation on Calabi-Yau manifolds. The method is based on a combination of Donaldson's spectral representation of the metric and a set of energy functionals we have found that are minimized on the Ricci-flat metric. The new method is efficient enough that it can be practically implemented on Mathematica. The energy functionals also yield a simple heuristic proof of Yau's theorem. In the introductory part of the talk, I will briefly describe a new method, related to Ricci flow, for computing black-hole and other real metrics.
