Title: Updates from the world of fast radio bursts
Date (JST): Thu, Apr 18, 2024, 13:30 - 15:00
Place: Seminar Room A
Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extragalactic radio transients of typcially ~ms duration, and energy release in radio waves of up at 10^42 erg. First discovered in 2007 using archival data, our knowledge of FRBs has rapidly evolved, with studies focussing on uncovering the nature of their progenitors, and how to use FRBs to study cosmological gas distributions. This talk will present both a historical perspective and the latest results on some of the key questions in FRB research. In particular, it will address the question of whether or not all fast radio bursts repeat, and provide some of the latest insights into their progenitors from FRB observations by the CRAFT Collaboration, which searches for FRBs using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP).
