Joint ICRR/ILANCE/IPMU Seminar

Speaker: Massimo Cappi (INAF/OAS-Bologna, Head of High Energy Division of INAF)
Title: New opportunities in high energy astrophysics from space and from the ground
Date (JST): Fri, Aug 02, 2024, 15:30 - 17:00
Place: ICRR 6F large seminar room (601)
Abstract: Nowadays, high and very high energy astrophysics are at a cross-road: X-ray Space Observatories such as e.g. Chandra, XMM-Newton, Integral, Swift and Fermi are slowly exhausting their power for new discoveries, after decades of vigorous and successful “service”. Similarly, at very high energies, MAGIC and HESS are slowing down their pace of unique publications and identifications of new VHE sources. However new scientific questions have also just turned up, often (but not exclusively) pointing to transient and multi-messenger science, that require new
facilities/observatories to become operational as soon as possible. Given this context, I will review current and future high energy observatories accessible from space and from the ground, and will summarise the broad opportunities they will offer, with particular focus on the space missions XRISM/NewAthena/Theseus and on the ground Observatory CTAO North and South.
