Title: Why Bell's inequalities confirm von Neumann's Theorem
Date (JST): Thu, Nov 28, 2024, 13:30 - 15:30
Place: Seminar Room A
Abstract: In this talk we will analyze the original proof of Bell's theorem (1964). We will show that, in spite of being a very well-known and cited paper, it has not yet been fully understood. In fact, its main result, Bell's inequalities, requires a condition never made explicit. We will argue that such a condition has as a consequence the apparent compatibility of a hidden-variable theory of the type presented by Bell and quantum mechanics. However, we will see that such a theory is inconsistent and, therefore, Bell's contribution can be understood as a new argument in favor of the incompatibility of a hidden-variable theory and quantum mechanics.
