Abstract: |
Empirical modeling is a method to infer how galaxies evolve by combining multiple observed datasets across redshifts. Here, we show how empirical modeling can reconstruct the actual evolution of supermassive black holes in galaxies, synthesizing a wide variety of observational constraints to reveal both the growth histories of supermassive black holes and the evolution of the black hole—galaxy relationship over cosmic time. We also show how empirical modeling can reconstruct the chemical evolution of galaxies, using new metallicity measurements from JWST, finding that potential well depth alone determines the fraction of metals that return to galaxies’ interstellar media.
