Abstract: |
In August 2024, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation revealed that Cosmos, a popular Australian science magazine, was publishing articles created by generative-AI (GenAI) on its website, drawing criticism from its contributors and former editors. In September 2024, an article and associated editorial in Science made the case for the effectiveness of GenAI in combating scientific misinformation and conspiratorial beliefs. These articles point to the substantial role GenAI does, could and will play in science communication. But the role should GenAI play in science communication. What are the ethical tensions and implications? This paper spells out three main areas of concerns for using GenAI for Science Communication.
