Abstract: An AdS vacuum of the form AdS x X is said to be "scale-separated" if the diameter of X (the "extra dimensions") is much smaller than the AdS curvature scale. Well-known AdS compactifications of string theory, such as AdS5 x S5 or AdS4 x S7, are not scale-separated. There are a few proposals for scale-separated vacua, but their consistency is disputed. I will describe scale-separated constructions, the surprising properties that a putative holographic dual would have, and present recent work to determine their consistency and its connection to conjectures about the stability of non-supersymmetric AdS vacua.
