Abstract:
On large scales, galaxy motions are driven entirely by the gravitational field of the total matter distribution. Consequently, peculiar velocities—deviations from the uniform Hubble expansion—serve as a powerful, direct dynamical probe of the full matter distribution. Such observations can thus be used not just to map the universe, but to create initial conditions to study its evolution. Yet in practice, mapping the universe is fraught with observational challenges related to noisy, one-dimensional radial peculiar velocities, as well as galaxies that are observed in redshift space and are subject to multiple biases. This talk will explore these hurdles and demonstrate how constrained simulations and cosmographic maps of the universe can measure cosmological parameters (such as H0, OmegaM), study the Local Group and help define our place in the (local) Universe.
