Abstract: The theory is a combination of represenation theory,
combinatorics, algebra and geometry, and is one of the most important
progresses in Lie Theory in the last 30 years. It plays a key role in
solutions to many difficult problems, such as: classifications of
irreducible characters of finite groups of Lie type, closed formula
for some difficult irreducible characters in Lie theory,
understanding representations of Hecke algebras, some problems on
primitive ideals of universal enveloping algebras of semisimple Lie
algebras. The theory also open many research directions, such as:
study of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, Kazhdan-Lusztig cells, relations
among Coxeter groups, perverse sheaves, K-theory, etc.. In this talk
we will introduce some basic concepts, some applications and some
questions of the theory.
