Abstract: The AdS/CFT correspondence is by now relatively well understood at the
level of macrophysics, i.e. thermodynamics and hydrodynamics. But
macrophysics is a approximate description of the underlying
microphysics. Historically, a crucial step toward the microphysics of
nature was Brownian motion. In this talk, I will study Brownian motion
in the AdS/CFT setup. A Brownian particle on the boundary corresponds
to a string stretching between the AdS boundary and the horizon in the
bulk. We will see how the Langevin equation governing the boundary
Brownian motion is related to the Hawking radiation on the string. We
will also see how the bulk physics can be used to compute physical
quantities on the boundary, and vice versa.
