Abstract: The discrete analogs of the Painlev\'e equations have been extensively studied for these decades, and their geometric aspects have been well developed now. The first part of the talk will be an introduction to such geometric theory based on the fundamental work by H.Sakai.
In the second part, I will consider the relation between such geometric theory and the isomonodromic formulation. The main example will be the elliptic difference Painlev\'e equation with the affine Weyl group symmetry of type $E_8^{(1)}$. Finally, as time will permit, I will explain more recent developments such as multivarable extensions (discrete Garnier systems), quantization, and the relations to gauge/string theory etc.
