Abstract: Gauge theory began with Maxwell's formulation of electrodynamics in 1864 and was further developed by Hermann Weyl and others. In 1954, Yang and Mills introduced non-abelian gauge theories as an attempt to resolve some of the great confusion in elementary particle physics. In 1970s, Atiyah and his school (including Hitchin) started to study the mathematical solution of Yang-Mills equations. Amazing applications to smooth topology of 4-manifolds was obtained by Donaldson on 1983. In this talk, I will quickly review these inspiring stories and some recent development of higher dimensional gauge theories as proposed by Donaldson and Thomas in 1996. In particular, some of my recent works on Calabi-Yau 4-folds will be briefly mentioned.
