Part 1: I will explain how to define the number of degrees of freedom in (strongly) interacting quantum field theories, particularly in odd dimensional spacetimes, and outline how it may be computed exactly for supersymmetric theories.
Part 2: I will talk about how these ideas are realized in five dimensional non-Lagrangian superconformal field theories with gravity duals. This involves obtaining exact results from non-renormalizable IR theories.
