Abstract: Flavor problems are a typical side-effect in models with gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking – and string models are no exception to this.

I will review the origins of these flavor problems in string theory and examine whether extradimensional locality can prevent flavor violation in type IIB string models with stabilized moduli. It will be shown that the non-perturbative effects responsible for stabilizing moduli will typically induce new Yukawa couplings which are a source of flavor violation. Type IIB orbifold models contain the essential features to study these non-perturbative corrections to Yukawa couplings in string compactifications. In these setups I will study the conditions under which new problematic contributions to Yukawas can be avoided and generalize the results to more realistic string models.
